The fast bowler Poised for a Key Part in Ashes Series

Test match action

Pat Cummins has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches set to start on November 21 in Western Australia.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, aside from his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
