The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a prominent honors show approaches, one notices a demand to include additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles in the world and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
